OnePlus shared last year’s intention to break into the smart television industry as soon as this year without sharing too many of the specifics on how such a device would operate. Now the OnePlus TV appears to be a true Android product line that has started to achieve regulatory bodies, revealing information such as screen size and accessibility.
The people at MySmartPrice this morning noticed that OnePlus presented a whopping thirty-nine phones for permission to the Bluetooth SIG, all labeled “1 + LED TV.” From this alone, we understand that OnePlus is serious about launching a intelligent TV, most probably this year as initially designed. However, there’s a lot, much more to collect from these listings.
One lingering issue was which OnePlus platform would choose to operate such an intelligent TV. It seemed like a secure bet that OnePlus TV would use Android TV, given the company’s experience with Android, but the reality is obviously a little more complicated than that.
The description of each phone provided to the Bluetooth SIG is “Unique Android TV.” What precisely this means is still unknown because, as our Ben Schoon explains, Google does not permit much customization of the Android TV experience outside the operator level. A traditional consumer product such as OnePlus TV would probably not qualify for the operator level of Android TV.
Instead, OnePlus may take advantage of their traditional Android expertise and experience to create their own full TV experience. Another possible significance is that “unique” relates to the unique OnePlus TV hardware, not the Android TV version.
A very clear pattern arises, looking carefully at the figures of the model. They all begin with a number indicating the size most probably, and end with two letters indicating the nation in which the model will be marketed. For instance, 75Q4US is most probable to be sold in the United States as a 75′′ OnePlus TV.
From this, we understand that OnePlus Android-based television will be sold in four dimensions — 43′′, 55′′, 65′′, and 75′′ — and three distinct areas— America, China, and India. More specifically, the 43′′ model of OnePlus TV appears to be sold only in India, whereas the size of 75′′ will only be in the US and China.
The only other detail that the Bluetooth SIG listing provides is that, thanks to a MediaTek wireless chip, all models will support Bluetooth version 5.0. Whether the OnePlus TV will run on a MediaTek SoC is not evident from the listing.
