We broke the news that classic Hangouts were set to be deprecated and substituted by Hangouts Chat and Meet last year. Google confirmed the news and subsequently provided a deadline for October 2019. The company announced today that it is postponing Hangouts ‘ transition and eventual death to June 2020.
Google laid out its deprecation schedule for classic Hangouts in January, with customers of G Suite being the first to be fully transformed into Chat and Meet Hangouts. The company has a four-part timeline, now planned for the late 2020.sition for G Suite by 2020, with Phase 4— where “Everyone needs to transition”
Specifically, the final shift will not start until at least June 2020 when classic Hangouts are fully disabled for a G Suite domain. Even then, Google did not specify the length of this period.
This delay in the death of Google Hangouts is due to customer feedback asking for “more time to migrate organizations from classic Hangouts to Hangouts Chat.” Google plans to improve the group conversation transition experience while adding more functionality to Chat.
G Suite admins have the ability to sign up for an Accelerated Transition Program to start migrating to Chat and Meet and disable classic Hangouts. In recent months, the upcoming Read receipts in Chat are joining other improvements.
Even with the death of classic Hangouts for G Suite, there will still be no impact on the consumer version. The original plan of Google was to start transitioning free accounts after the company migration, which is still the case today.
