Your Google Home speakers and displays receive frequent firmware updates, but they are automatically installed and you don’t usually notice. Nonetheless, one of the latest firmware updates from Google Home seems to have been bricking many devices and can not be fixed.
Posts from users who had their Google Home systems stopped working recently appeared in Google’s forums and also on Reddit (via Android Police). In general, with all four LEDs lit up, the devices were completely unresponsive. Some users have been able to fix this by rebooting and resetting a plant, but most users do not have the same luck.
Google has already recognized the problem by saying a team is “working on the issue,” but that’s been discussed in late September and nothing has been mentioned in the month since.
For those who have been bricked as a result of this firmware update with their Google Home devices–Google Home and Google Home Minis seem to be most affected–there is no fix available. Because the devices are out of warranty neither will Google replace the hardware. We look forward to Google fixing the firmware update for further devices and helping those who have had their hardware break.
