Google just released the security patch yesterday for its Pixel smartphones in December, but on Pixel 3 devices there is an unfortunate problem for users. Apparently, when using gesture navigation, the Pixel Launcher continually crashes on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a.
Reddit threads and tweets have appeared since Google started rolling out this update yesterday showing this widespread problem of crashing. The Pixel Launcher crashes continuously on the Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL and the Pixel 3a / XL when using the device.
The problem itself is linked back to the new gesture navigation of Android 10. Users see their Pixel Launcher crashing with this option enabled while those with the2-buttonor3-button options enabled do not see the issue. Something probably went wrong with whatever changes Google made to allow 3rd party launchers to gesture navigation.
The folks at Android Police reported that with a full reset of the device some users are able to fix this issue but an easier solution seems to be uninstalling updates to the Pixel Launcher.
Notably, the Pixel Launcher versions of the Pixel 4 were previously sideloaded by many of the affected users. Pixel 2 reports are also available, but they are not as usual.
This is more than certainly something that Google will fix through the Google Play Store with either another OTA or an update to the Pixel Launcher. In either case, if you use gesture navigation with the Pixel Launcher on a Pixel 3 to avoid this crashing problem, you might want to quit updating. In the tweet below, you can see the issue in action.
