In response to its phones being more expensive than ever, OnePlus has been expected to debut a spiritual successor to its “OnePlus X” in the upcoming OnePlus Z. Now, a pretty reliable tipster claims that the OnePlus Z will arrive with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G processor.
Previously, it was reported that the OnePlus Z — “OnePlus 8 Lite” as we knew it at the time — would ship with MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 processor. That probably would have been fine in terms of performance, battery life, and the like, but Qualcomm is the king of Android for a reason (and not just because they’re basically a monopoly).
Max J, who has a pretty good track record for OnePlus leaks, says the OnePlus Z with the Snapdragon 765G will arrive.
The Snapdragon 765G is a lesser processor than the 865 used in the OnePlus 8, but it comes with a few advantages. For one thing the chip itself is less expensive than the 865. The small drop in power can also contribute to better battery life. One of the biggest advantages, however, is that the 765G has its 5G modem integrated into the chip itself, ensuring that OnePlus doesn’t have to pay extra for the X55 modem from Qualcomm.
Price is probably the main reason OnePlus decides to introduce a phone with the Snapdragon 765G. That’s why we expect the Google Pixel 5 to ship with the same chip later this year when it debuts. This year’s Snapdragon 865 is making every Android flagship phone costly, so why not try some alternatives?
We’ll have to wait and see if this article turns out to be accurate, but looking at it right here right now, at least, makes sense. We’re hoping to get more information soon.
