Android Auto support has come with the latest Skype Insider Preview, but sadly only for sending and receiving SMS messages.
Announced in an official blog post about Insider, the feature has been around on the preview program for a while, but is now available more widely. The biggest disappointment is that calling is simply not possible, but the aforementioned ability to use your voice to send and receive text messages (h/t Android Police) is softening the blow.
This may not be ideal for those who use Skype as their main point of contact, but it is far better than not having any kind of integration at all. However, it’s worth noting that Google prevents VoIP calls on Android Auto, meaning we ‘re unlikely to see Skype’s phone call support unless there’s a change to that cap.
You’ll need the Skype Insider 8.62 build on your Android device to get integration with Android Auto into your vehicle. You will be able to get the latest update as it rolls out to the Google Play Store right now.
