Google did have a prototype “Firefly” car in the early days of the self-driving car project that was tiny and lacked a steering wheel. It has since retrofitted its technology primarily to electric Chrysler Pacifica minivans and is working on the Jaguar I-Pace.
Waymo may focus on sensors, computing, and software when not designing a whole car. This benefits from the “expertise in vehicle design, engineering , and manufacturing” of existing manufacturers.
The most recent automotive partnership saw Waymo become the Volvo Car Group’s “only global L4 partner.” That includes the brand namesake, Polestar and Lynk & Co. Foreign. Internationale. Level 4 is considered “High Automation” where “vehicle is capable of performing all driving functions under certain conditions.”
Initially, this strategic partnership focuses on incorporating the Waymo Driver system into a “all-new mobility-focused electric vehicle platform for ride-hailing services.” Essentially, these vehicles are intended for commercial / fleet use and not for daily buying.
Google itself also works on Android Automotive with Polestar and Volvo. Certain current partners at Waymo include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and Renault Nissan Mitsubishi (Alliance).
